Seafood export is now recognized as a major avenue for export earnings. In order to meet international standards, it is imperative to have world class fishing harbours. Kanniyakumari stands to gain with a number of fishing harbour works in progress .
1.Fishing Harbour at Colachel
Government of India have accorded administrative approval for the construction of Fishing Harbour at Colachel in Kanniyakumari District at an estimated cost of Rs.87.75 crore and the Government have so far released Rs.80.14 crore towards Central and State share in four instalements. The construction of Eastern and Western breakwaters and its approaches to Colachel fishing harbour was taken up in the first phase and side facilities works are completed in second phase.
2.Fishing Harbour at Thengapattinam
An Administrative approval has been accorded by the Government of India for the construction of Fishing Harbour at Thengapattinam in Kanniyakumari District at an estimated cost of Rs. 97.40 crore. A sum of Rs. 19.30 crore towards Central and Rs.48.70 Crore towards State share has been released for implementing the Project. The construction of main breakwater has been completed 630 m and leeward breakwater has been completed for 120m Land side facilities works are under progress.
3. Fishing Harbour at Chinnamuttom
Government of India have accorded administrative approval for the existing of Fishing Harbour at Chinnamuttom l in Kanniyakumari District at an estimated cost of Rs.7352.00 Lakhs vide 33013-12/2012 FY-H and component of extension of eastern breakwater 100m Internal road 1660m Drainage 3220m, Western breakwater 430, Approach road 900m, Jetty 215m, Quay wall 200m, Dredging, Auction hall 2No, Net mending shed 2No, Great Washing area 1 No, Gen set room 1BNo, Security room, Watch tower cum winch room, parking area, sump, Restaurant, Admin building building, works are completed and the Government have so far released Rs.80.14 crore towards Central and State share in four installments. The construction of Eastern and Western breakwaters and its approaches to Colachel fishing harbour was taken up in the first phase and side facilities works are completed in second phase.
Fishing Harbour under “BOT’’ (Build, Operate & Transfer) System at Muttom
The Government have a accorded permission for the construction of Fishing Harbour at Muttom in Kanniyakumari District under “BOT” (Build Operate & Transfer) System. The total cost of the project is Rs.53.92 crore. The concessionaire Viz. M/s Jeppiaar Fishing Harbour Muttom Pvt. Ltd has so far spent Rs. 34 crore for the project.
Similarly Fishing Harbour works under the Bot (Build, Own , Operate and Transfer) System is underway at Rajakkamangalam and Manakudy.
