Local Self Government

Text Box: Even after the carving of the Kanyakumari district out of the territories transferred to the then Madras State from the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin State in 1956, the administrative set up of the Local bodies then in existence, were allowed to continue until 31st March 1962. The Tamil Nadu  Panchayats Act 1958 was extended to the Kanyakumari district with effect from 1st April 1962.

There are 9 Panchayat Unions comprised of 56 Town Panchayats and 99 Village Panchayats. There are 4 Municipalities in Kanyakumari District namely Nagercoil, Padmanabhapuram,Colachel and Kuzhithurai.
